FAQ - Tank overlay

FAQ Tank blanketing | Tank fumigation | Protective gas blanketing
Your questions, our answers!

We try to answer frequently asked customer questions about tank blanketing, tank fumigation or protective gas blanketing in our FAQ.

tank blanketing

1. What is meant by tank blanketing or tank fumigation?
Tank blanketing is a critical practice in various industries in which a protective gas is held above the surface of a liquid medium or solid in a closed container. This method is used to minimise unwanted influences in order to maintain the quality and integrity of the medium.

In general, the term describes a controlled overlay of a product in a container with gas.

2. Does tank blanketing, tank fumigation or inert gas blanketing mean the same thing?
The terms tank blanketing, tank fumigation or inert gas blanketing are often used interchangeably as they refer to similar practices. However, it is important to note that the exact use of the terms can vary depending on the industry and specific application. Generally, they refer to techniques used to ensure the quality and integrity of media stored in tanks.
The technical term "inerting" or "inertisation" often used in this context is synonymous with the word "blanketing".

3.  What advantages does tank blanketing offer me?

  • Safety and security
  • Protection against contamination
  • Fully automatic mechanical system

4. Where and in which sectors/areas is tank blanketing used?
Tank blanketing is needed wherever liquids are filled and emptied into closed containers. Possible applications are in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, in the cosmetics industry, when decanting food and beverage and, of course, in many applications with oil and petrol.

5. Which products can be overlaid?

The superimposed products can be liquids, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and much more.

6. Which gas is used for superposition?
The most commonly used gas for this application is nitrogen.

7. How exactly does pressurised blanketing work?
Due to temperature changes or product filling or removal, the filling levels in the tank can fluctuate and the gas pressure of the inert gas in the tank can vary. This process is also known as tank breathing.

1. The pressure rises as the closed tank is filled.
2. If the pressure exceeds 30 mbar due to an increase in the filling level or a rise in temperature, the pre-pressure regulator relieves the pressure (gas flows out of the tank).
3. When the tank cools down or is emptied, the pressure drops. As soon as the pressure gauge falls below 10 mbar, the pressure regulator opens (gas flows into the tank).

8. In which bar range/pressure range does the ventilation take place?
The tank is pressurised and vented in the millibar range.
